The focus in this part of the unit is for students to become familiar with how weathering and erosion negatively affect people. They will use what they have learned to argue their opinion. The unit will culminate with a STEM challenge in which students will create a device that slows the effects of erosion.
Day 1 – 2: Problem Scenarios
Utilize “Problem Scenarios Slideshow” to discuss the issues that arise and ways to prevent or solve them.
Then introduce the argument topic: Should people be allowed to build by the coastline? Students will choose a yes or no position on this topic, then join others with similar beliefs. Each group will discuss why and what supports their opinion. Give out large paper/poster paper. Each group will record their thinking/reasons.
Each group will have the opportunity to present their reasons.
Then students will write their argument utilizing reasons from the group work and posters.
Day 3 – 5: STEM Challenge
Students should follow the “Design Loop Model” .
Break students into groups of 3 or 4. Hand out “Erosion Design Challenge”.
Students can use either plan sheet to plan out their design: “STEM Design and Plan Worksheet” or “STEM Mini Journal”
Utilize “STEM Rubric” to assess students’ work.
